Pedagogical interpretation of the concept "contemporary art".Irina Afanasievna Solovtsova & Anton Igorevich Shipitsin - 2021 - Kant 41 (4):293-299.
The purpose of the study is to identify the pedagogical component of the concept "contemporary art", which is a necessary condition for the using contemporary art for solving problems in spiritual and moral education of students. The article describes the main approaches to understanding the category of "contemporary art" and shows how these approaches are reflected in the minds of teachers, class supervisors, and teachers of additional education. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the definition of the pedagogical (...)

Sculpting Character: Aristotle's Voluntary as Affectability.Audrey L. Anton - 2016 - Labyrinth: An International Journal for Philosophy, Value Theory and Sociocultural Hermeneutics 18 (2):75-103.
I argue that the two criteria traditionally identified as jointly sufficient for voluntary behavior according to Aristotle require qualification. Without such qualification, they admit troubling exceptions. Through minding these difficult examples, I conclude that a third condition mentioned by Aristotle – the eph' hēmin – is key to qualifying the original two criteria. What is eph' hēmin is that which is efficiently caused by appetite and teleologically caused by reason such that the agent could have, in theory, acted differently. I (...)

The Bright and the Good: The Connection Between Intellectual and Moral Virtues.Audrey L. Anton (ed.) - 2018 - New York: Rowman & Littlefield International.
This book provides a contemporary overview of an age-old question in philosophy, namely the connection between intellectual and moral virtues. Ideal for courses in virtue ethics and virtue epistemology, the volume includes coverage of specific topics, such as vice, ignorance, hope, courage, patience, justice and mercy.

The Epistemological Benefits of Socrates’ Religious Experience.Audrey Anton - 2016 - History of Philosophy & Logical Analysis 19 (1):70-87.
There seems to be tension between portrayals of Socrates as both a committed philosopher and a pious man. For instance, one might doubt Socrates’ commitment to philosophy since he seems to irrationally defer to a daimonion. On the other hand, the fact that he challenges messages from Oracles and the gods’ role concerning the origin of the pious draws into question Socrates’ piety. In this paper, I argue that Socratic piety and rationality are not only compatible, but they are also (...)

Teaching Plato’s Cave through Your Students’ Past Experiences.Audrey L. Anton - 2016 - American Association of Philosophy Teachers Studies in Pedagogy 2:143-166.
Plato’s Allegory of the Cave is both a staple in the philosopher’s diet and the lesson that is often difficult to digest. In this paper, I describe one way to teach the Sun, Line, and Cave analogies in reference to students’ personal past experiences. After first learning about Plato’s metaphysics and epistemology through reading Republic VI-VII, students are asked to reflect upon a time in their lives when they emerged from a particular “cave of ignorance.” In reflecting on this experience, (...)

Basic Writings of St. Thomas Aquinas: (Volume 1).Anton C. Pegis (ed.) - 1997 - Hackett Publishing Company.
Includes the whole of the First Part of the Summa Theologica. Pegis's revision and correction of the English Dominican Translation renders Aquinas' technical terminology consistently as it conveys the directness and simplicity of Aquinas' writing; the Introduction, notes, and index aim at giving the text its proper historical setting, and the reader the means of studying St. Thomas within that setting.

  44. "A piece of yourself": Ethical issues in biometric identification. [REVIEW]Anton Alterman - 2003 - Ethics and Information Technology 5 (3):139-150.
The proliferation of biometric identification technology raises difficult issues in the matter of security, privacy and identity. Though biometric "images" are not images per se, they are both unique representations of an individual in themsevles and a means of access to other identifying information. I compare biometric imaging with other kinds of identifying representations and find that there are issues specific to biometric ID's. Because they represent information that is written into the body they are directly related to one's sense (...)

  45. The New Wittgenstein (review). [REVIEW]Anton Alterman - 2001 - Journal of the History of Philosophy 39 (3):456-457.
The essays in the book have two main emphases. Regarding the late Wittgenstein, they focus on the idea that skepticism about rule-following is undermined, indeed incoherent, in virtue of Wittgenstein's emphasis on context of utterance and "forms of life" (roughly the "community" view of his later work). In the early Wittgenstein they take a "resolute" position on nonsense, saying that he did not believe there was some ineffable or informative nonsense, but only pure and utter nonsense, including everything in the (...)

    Plato’s Defence of Poetry. [REVIEW]John P. Anton - 1987 - Idealistic Studies 17 (1):89-90.
This brilliant study, original in certain ways, supersedes everything that has been written in recent years on Plato’s philosophy of poetry and myth in particular. Elias’s familiarity with the literature is as impressive as is his penetrating analysis of the diverse positions taken by friend or foe on Plato’s theory of poetry. In the course of the discussion Elias answers two basic questions: Do the myths form a coherent whole despite their variety, and how is this variety to be understood (...)
